I think also one of the disadvantages of a newsletter, especially if that newsletter is provided via RSS is that your readers can get too dependent on them, and just read the newsletter, and then not go to your website. On my personal website, I have a subscription box where users can subscribe to via email, and all it is, is that they receive every blog post via email, the negative to it, like I said is that often times people will read it and then not come to the site for the updates, and just rely on that email.
